The Critical Role of Base Steel in Storage Silos
- Resistance to Hooping Stress
Bulk storage materials exert a lateral pressure on the silo wall, which, in turn, creates a circumferential or hoop tensile stress. Thus, silo wall steel plates must have the mechanical properties and material integrity to withstand bulk storage material filling in the silo and the various adverse operating conditions without yielding or bulging.
The silo wall in the upper and lower sections, which have the least and the most circumferential stress, respectively, can be designed with thinner and thicker plates or low and high-strength base silos, respectively.
- Resistance to Axial Loads
Storage silos deal with gravity, friction, and lateral loads. Steel plates and their connections (vertical seams, bolts, and welds) must resist axial loads and friction-induced buckling. Resistance to localized deformation and elephant foot buckling must also be designed.
- Resistance to Wind Loads
Silos are tall and thin, which means they are susceptible to wind load, especially in a low or empty condition. Combined with stiffening rings or support columns, the wind loads on the silo must allow the steel material to maintain a sufficient elastic modulus and stability to resist wind-induced ovalization and loss of stability.
- Resistance to Seismic Loads
During an earthquake, silos are subjected to the combined effects of horizontal inertial loads and the dynamic amplification of material pressures. To avoid the brittle failure of the silo walls, the control of seismic energy is done through high ductility and high energy absorption of the steel.
- Ensuring Overall Structural Stability
Steel is the main load-bearing component of a structure, but it is also a component of the structure’s overall stability. Its yield strength, elastic modulus, and dimensional tolerances also govern local buckling, overall stability, and the functioning of structural connections.
Why Base Steel Selection Matters More Than Corrosion Protection?

- Steel Strength
Even the best anti-corrosion treatments do not prevent structural failure from insufficient strength. Strength, the most important factor, directly correlates to the fulfillment of design codes, including the ultimate limit state.
- Steel Toughness
Low toughness steels will undergo brittle fractures at low temperatures and at stress raisers (like welds and perforations) especially at temperature gradients. This kind of failure is very dangerous.
- Steel Ductility
Rolling and pressing are shaping processes used to manufacture silos. Materials of high ductility are less likely to fracture and, therefore, improve the accuracy of shapes and surface quality by decreasing forming defects.
- Welding Performance
Poor welding quality leads to defects like incomplete fusion and embrittlement. Good welding adaptability greatly reduces defects in complicated site conditions.
Note: Anti-corrosion failures are usually “chronic problems” (can be observed, can be repaired). Failures of the base material are usually “sudden problems” (failures are irreversible and have great impacts). This is the reasoning behind the focus on basic material problems in the field of engineering.

Key Engineering Factors in Storage Silo Steel Selection
Choosing the appropriate steel material for a storage silo requires extensive engineering considerations based on the structural loads the silo will be subject to, the operating conditions the silo will contend with, and the environmental conditions as well as the service requirements of the particular project. During the design of custom storage silos, appropriate steel selection will affect the structure’s safety, the durability of the silos, and the operational reliability of the silos in the long term.

Storage Silo Capacity
The greater the desired storage capacity, the greater the height of the columns of material, which translates to greater circumferential and axial stresses at the bottom of the tank. High capacity storage silos generally need to use high strength steels or have greater thicknesses of steel to be designed safe and within the appropriate limits.
In large-scale industrial storage silo systems, a sectional wall design normally has varying wall thicknesses to balance the loads and optimize materials.
Storage Silo Diameter
As tankers widen, circumferential weakness of the silos walls as tension grows, expands like a barrel. Silos of large diameter also need superior strength. Large diameter silos of carbon steel storage require the strength of steel and the stability of structures.
All of the above is also applicable if ovalization and deformation occur. Because of the stiffness of the material and the geometry, precision is imperative in the silo.
Bulk Material Density
The density of material determines the lateral pressure exerted on the wall of the storage tank. Due to their greater bulk, high density materials such as cement, mineral powder, and ash, result in more significant design loads as compared to more low density bulk materials such as grain and biomass.
For bulk materials of greater density and strength, storage silos of a greater strength and stability are often a design requirement to ensure the safety of the silo in the long term.
Wind Loads
The design of storage silos is affected by the wind loads that are a result of the wind pressure and the characteristics of the storage silo and its height.
Storage silo designs that are located in coastal or high wind areas need to take into consideration the effects of wind on the silos and the fatigue that will be experienced in the silos due to wind loads.
Seismic Loads
When designing for seismic loads, the toughness and ductility of the steels used in construction of the storage silos is of greater importance. In areas of greater seismic activity, steels of greater toughness, in order to greater mitigate the risk of brittle fracture, are often the steel of choice.
To also ensure the design of storage silos remains intact during seismic loads, the design of the connections is of greater importance.
Core Performance Indicators Influenced by Steel Selection Design Service Life
Base steel material of steel storage silos, with reserve strength, fatigue resistance, and environmentally durable, will influence the overall storage silo service life.
Steel storage silos constructed from high-grade steel will experience reduced performance degradation over time, allowing the storage silo to maintain designated safety levels for the entire service life of the silo.
Corrosion Resistance
Corrosion protection coatings are enhanced by the steel materials microstructural uniformity and chemical makeup, as well as their corrosion protective characteristics. Coatings provide limited protection, and poor quality steel tends to corrode rapidly if the coatings become damaged.
For industrial storage silo projects, selecting corrosion-resistant steel substrates is essential for long-term durability.
Structural Strength
The strength of steel storage silos is determined by the yield and tensile strength, which ultimately affects the design thickness of the silos walls and engineering standards.
Insufficient strength of the material limit the size, storage capacity, and overall reliable operation of steel storage silos.
Airtightness Performance
The storage silos performance of airtightness is affected by the density of the steel, its weldability, and its ability to control deformation. High quality steel is required to minimize welding and sealing defects.
Wear Resistance
Certain sections such as hoppers and discharge zones are subjected to abrasive wear through the movement of steel storage silos. Storage silos with superior hardness and fine stability provide significant wear resistance.
This is required for storage silos of cement, minerals, and powders.
Maintenance and Inspection Frequency
With high-performance base steel, the corrosion and structural fatigue design challenges of storage silos are addressed, which reduces the frequency of maintenance and the costs associated with operational silos.
On the contrary, lower-performance base steel elastically deforms more easily and leads to higher long-term costs due to more frequent inspections, maintenance, and structural repair.
Differentiated Material Design for Critical Parts of Storage Silos
The right choice of materials for the critical components of a storage silo affects the structural performance, durability, and operational safety of the entire silo system. Some building steels are better than others, but not all high strength building steels are better than the others. Oftentimes the right choice of steel depends on how the silo component is going to be constructed.
Is High-Strength Steel Always Better?
- Advantages

- Narrow welding tolerance, increased welding difficulty
High-strength steel will offer trade-offs between weldability, cost, and construction/assembly at the site, but offers the benefit of significant weight and load reduction.
