Benefits of Using Advanced Stainless-Clad Storage Silo Systems

What Is a Stainless-Clad Steel Storage Silo?

It is a storage system that has a body made of carbon steel and layers of stainless steel in areas that are critical and in direct contact.

This silo design does not utilize the full stainless steel body. Instead, it will incorporate stainless steel only in corrosion resistance, hygiene, wear protection, and anti-sticking areas. Having the body of carbon steel and in critical areas the body of stainless steel, makes this silo design strong. This silo design is also cost effective and safe for bulk storage.

Common Challenges of Conventional Steel Storage Silos

Conventional carbon steel and galvanized storage silos are restrictive and are unable to operate in many harsh industrial environments. Conventional storage steel silos have a number of long-term performance issues that include:

  • Corrosion in high humidity environments and/or in the presence of acid, as well as in coastal environments.
  • Food-grade storage silos becoming a contamination risk.
  • Product build-up and arching due to the use of sticky powders or the use of wet materials.
  • Abrasion due to the high velocity of bulk transport of solid materials.
  • Wear that is localized leading to a reduced useful life.
  • Maintenance and the cost of replacing anti-corrosion elements rise with time.

Limitations of Completely Stainless Steel Silos

Fully stainless steel storage silos pose additional engineering and cost challenges in fully constructing the silos, or the structures of the silos, in stainless steel. While stainless steel boasts excellent hygiene and corrosion resistance, the entire silo may become costly.

Typical drawbacks include:

  • Extremely high project cost
  • Material redundancy in non-critical structural zones
  • Complex fabrication and welding requirements
  • Greater thermal deformation control challenges during installation

Stainless Compound Steel Silo —— A Safe and Cost-Efficient Turnkey Storage Solution

In a gradual transition for the sake of safety, cost, and project efficiency, the market began using a hybrid design: Carbon Steel Structure + Stainless Steel Functional Areas. With this design, the storage silo helps customers to:

  • Reduce total investment cost
  • Improve corrosion resistance
  • Extend equipment lifespan
  • Maintain food-grade storage conditions
  • Lower long-term maintenance requirements
  • Improve discharge efficiency for difficult-flow materials

Because of these benefits, stainless steel storage silos are becoming the preferred turnkey storage solution for food, feed, chemicals, and other bulk storage silos. With the modernization of storage facilities, stainless steel storage silos are the preferred turnkey storage solution.

In silo design and construction, the primary concerns related to performance do not revolve around the structural strength of the system. They are related to corrosion, erosion, and deterioration of the materials, condensation, the build-up of residuals during discharge and cleansing, failure of welds, and the delamination of coatings or linings.

Stainless Steel Lining Plate

Stainless steel linings are thin sheets of stainless steel that are fixed to the interior surfaces of the carbon steel silo. These sheets provide protection against corrosion. They are fixed by welding, edge rolling, and other sheet metal fabrication operations.

The several benefits of this construction technique include the use of different materials, repairs done on site, and lower fixed prices. On the other hand, the method has high demands on the quality of installation, sealing of joints, and provisions for expansion and contraction.

Explosion-Bonded Stainless Steel Clad Plate

This composite plate utilizes an explosive bonding technique to metallurgically bond both stainless steel and carbon steel. The resultant composite plate has a high strength bonded system and excellent structural integrity.

The surface layer of stainless steel provides corrosion resistance. The layer of carbon steel provides the structural integrity of the plate. This system is preferable when higher reliability and longer service life are required.

Selection Considerations: Stainless Steel Lining VS Explosion-Formed Plate

When the materials have the potential of causing internal corrosion, such as caking materials, moisture, and dust of a hygroscopic nature, and especially when the materials have an acidic or alkaline nature, corrosion protection of the internal lining will then be of greater priority than the structural steel. In corrosion protection, both stainless steel lining and stainless steel clad plate will help but:

  • Stainless steel lining: It is better when the quality of the installation is in question since it is less dependent on the quality of the installation. It is usually applicable to:
    • Projects with moderate corrosion exposure but strong budget sensitivity.
    • Large silo structures with localized corrosion zones requiring segmented treatment
    • Facilities where periodic shutdowns and maintenance access are acceptable
    • Applications prioritizing flexibility and repairability
  • Explosion-bonded clad plate: It depends more on the intrinsic quality and integrity of the material itself. It is typically suitable for:
    • Severely Corrosive environments.
    • High-cleanliness or hygienic storage applications.
    • Projects with high downtime costs.
    • Situations that demand Integrity of inner wall for long periods without concern of lining disengagement, bulging or separation.
    • Owners who prefer corrosion protection to be embedded into the material system itself rather than relying heavily on field installation quality

Ideal Applications for Stainless-Clad Steel Storage Silos

  • High-Value Grain and Food Processing Projects

These safe storage silo systems are perfect for those projects with high value products that require stringent hygiene standards and protection of product quality over extended periods, with examples including rice processing plants, flour mills, food-grade raw material storage, and the storage of dairy ingredients.

  • High Temperature and High Humidity Regions

Stainless-clad storage silos are perfect for tropical and coastal areas, while traditional steel storage silos will suffer from accelerated corrosion. Typical project areas include Southeast Asia and Coastal Africa, high-humidity industrial areas of South America.

  • Corrosive Bulk Material Storage

Stainless storage silos further protect storage of bulk materials that are corrosive or moisture-sensitive such as DDGS, wet corn, fermented feed, fertilizers, and mineral and industrial powder additives.

  • Industries with Strict Hygiene Requirements

For industries where maintaining the highest level of hygiene and controlling contamination are critical, engineered stainless-clad storage silo systems provide the necessary performance along with the assurance of sanitary storage and clear design for easy maintenance and cleaning of hygiene-critical surfaces. These include food and feed processing, dairy and pharmaceutical industries, and biotechnology.
